Lab-Grown Diamonds Are Real. The Origin Is Different.
Lab-grown diamonds are diamonds. What changes is not the material, but where and how it came to be.
Two diamonds can both weigh two carats and have noticeably different proportions on the hand. One may carry more of its weight below the setting; another may spread farther across the finger. An elongated oval may appear larger than a round diamond of the same carat weight simply because its surface area is distributed differently.
That is why carat is most useful when considered alongside measurements, shape and proportion.
Weight vs. presence
One carat equals 200 milligrams. It is a measurement of weight, not diameter, width or length.
For a round diamond, millimeter measurements offer a better indication of how much space the stone will occupy when viewed from above. With ovals, emerald cuts, radiants, pears and marquise shapes, length-to-width ratio becomes part of the equation as well.
The result is that two diamonds with the same number on the certificate can create very different impressions when worn.
Why shape changes perceived size
Elongated cuts distribute their weight over a longer surface. An oval, pear or marquise diamond can therefore create more visual coverage than a round diamond of comparable carat weight.
That does not automatically make the elongated stone better. Proportion still matters. A diamond cut too shallow in pursuit of surface area can lose light performance, while one cut too deeply may hide weight where it cannot be seen.
The objective is not simply to make a diamond look as large as possible. It is to make the proportions feel right.
Look beyond the number
Carat weight is useful for comparison, but jewelry is experienced visually.
Consider the stone's actual measurements, how it sits within its setting, how much of the finger or ear it occupies and whether its scale feels balanced with the design around it.
